Reading while walking

13 Dec 2025

I read in various settings: in bed, on a chair, at a café. Each has its own quiet pleasures, but perhaps the one I enjoy the most is reading while walking — even though I must admit I don't do it as often as I'd like.

Reading while walking allows me to stay focused for longer, as walking like an automaton keeps me alert. It is a low-effort activity that doesn't distract me from the text.

It is especially effective at night, when I might feel sleepy reading in bed or on a chair. Then, sleep becomes the enemy, and walking is a great way to fight it. I simply walk slowly around the house, sometimes stopping for a moment.

I also read while walking in the street. I've developed a sense for avoiding obstacles and dangers without losing the thread of what I’m reading. I find it quite enjoyable, especially when I have nowhere in particular to go.

I'd love to have a cloister at home, a place to walk around endlessly while reading. It feels meditative, and I'd be constantly going round and round with a book in hand!
